October 2017 – Message from the Chair

Boom, bam, whiz. National chemistry week is upon us. If you like pyrotechnics and explanations of the amazing chemistry behind demonstrations, you need to attend the national chemistry week celebration this October 19th at the University of Tennessee at Martin. I would also like to take this time to remind you that nominations for awards (outstanding high school teacher, professional chemist, and undergraduate research award) are due the day after the meeting. Please submit your nominations with the form posted on our website or to one of our officers by that date. Our September meeting at Union was well attended, so let’s continue that trend in these last two meetings of the year. Look forward to seeing you at this meeting or especially the gala Friday 10/13. Should be a fun time!

September 2017 – Message from the Chair

Greetings all,

I’m pleased to say this year has been a successful one for the KLS, culminating with being nominated for four Chemluminary awards. Out of those four nominations, we earned three this past month at the ACS national meeting in Washington D.C. One of the amazing things our section does is hold meetings each month during the academic year where current chemical research is presented. This month is no exception. Please join us — we’ll be treated to a presentation from John Hershberger of Arkansas State regarding the development of a cross-coupling and Biginelli reaction sequence leading to new bioactive derivatives. Students interested in graduate school are especially encouraged to attend!

April 2017 – Message from the Chair

Looking for Easter eggs? I have one for you. On April 27th Dr. Rui Zhang from Western Kentucky University will be presenting on his research into biomimetic oxidations. It is sure to be an informative talk, and I challenge everyone to attend. I know our semesters are coming to an end, and with that everyone’s schedules are busy. However, please make time to support your section.

March 2017 – Message from the Chair

Hello all. This month marks our third meeting of the year. We have had two amazing meetings so far that have been very well attended. Please help us continue this trend by joining us for our upcoming meeting on March 23rd at the Milan Perkins. The talk will be on cutting-edge research in materials coming out of Dr. Davita Watkins’ lab at Ole Miss. I hope all can join us to celebrate this third day of spring by hearing an informative talk.

February 2017 – Message from the Chair

February….the month of love. Show your love of chemistry by coming to the meeting this month at Murray. Dr. Monte Helm will be coming all the way from Kansas City, and giving a seminar on his experience with phosphine ligands. I have it on good authority that Dr. Helm is a dynamic speaker that will engage any level student of chemistry no matter the age. The national ACS Meeting is also on the horizon, and we’ll briefly discuss how our section is still being recognized for its innovation. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

January 2017 – Message from the Chair

Greetings KLS Family,

Now is the beginning of a new year. Now is the time to resolve to participate in something great. Now is the time to resolve to learn chemistry by listening to excellent chemistry seminars. Now is the time to resolve to connect to the local chemistry community. Now is the time to resolve to take time to visit with old and new friends. Now is the time to resolve to eat delicious pork chops. To fulfill all these resolutions and more, attend the meeting this month at Fresh Market in Paris. I’m excited about what is happening in our section. Come to this month’s meeting or visit our website to find out what’s going on, then get involved.
